*Margaritas, Mojitos, and the Housecat

16x20.  Oil on canvas board.    2014

This painting was inspired by a trip my wife and I took to the wonderful ghost town of Jerome Arizona.  We had drinks at the Jerome Grand Hotel which was built as a hospital in the 1930's.  It closed in 1950 and was empty for 44 years.  It became a hotel in 1994. What a view from these windows!

I took a selfie there and decided to make a painting.  How the "housecat" got in the painting, I'm not quite sure.   They say the place is one of the most haunted places in America...

*Van Gogh Style

17x14. Oil on canvas panel.  2016

This one reminds me of Van Gogh"s paintings.  I think I painted it from a still life in about half an hour.

*Blue Crock and Apples

14x18.   Oil on canvas board.   2012

This is one of my favorite still lifes, it's my grandma's blue crock, from their farm in Elo Mi.  She made the most delicious apple pies from Transparent apples from the orchard on the next 40 (acres) that my Dad owned.  Transparent apples don't keep long in storage, that's why you'll never see them in a store.  But they make the perfect apple pie!

*Grandma Hawke's 1930's Stuff

16x20.     Oil on canvas panel.   2013

I was doing a still life painting at the BBAC and needed some items to paint. I found the statue in some stuff Kaye got from her Mom, Marie, after Great Grandma Ethel Hawke died in Marquette Michigan. The statue is an Art Deco style design that was very popular in the 1930’s, and you’ll often see this type of artwork on Antiques Roadshow. It’s actually on my bookshelf right now, a few years back I put gold leaf on it. I always thought it is very cool ! The trophy was won in the 1930’s by George Hawke Jr. “ Young Man of the Year” I believe. From a Fraternal Organization in Marquette. ( Elks Club ? ) As far as I know it sits on a bookshelf in George Hawke the Third’s basement in Rochester MI. Kaye and I decided that he should have it many years ago. And that’s the last place I saw it, I think it’s still there. The big copper plate I’m not sure where that came from but likely Marie had that too, and gave it to us.

*Grandma's Coffee Pot

16x20. Oil on canvas panel.       2013

My Grandma's old percolator coffee pot from the 1930's I believe.  She made the best coffee I've ever had in my life.  Along with her home made cinnamon bread (fresh baked in a wood kitchen stove) there was nothing better.  She was the best cook I've ever known.
